GEORGIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY
DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA
McCULLOUGH RIFLES
Text in BOLD added by author and not found in Henderson's Roster of Georgia Confederate Soldiers.
Most of the members of this company were enlisted by Captain John Y. Flowers in the DeKalb Murphy Guards and were mustered into the service of the Confederate States September 26, 1861, at Camp Kirkpatrick, DeKalb County. This company was ordered into Camp of Instruction August 1861 , by Colonel John B. Campbell, but he, having failed to raise his regiment, they were mustered into Confederate service as Wright's Legion 10/1/1861. Other men were recruited by Captain Bomar and were mustered into the Murphy Guards by Captain Flowers at the different camps of Wright's Legion. Company A became too large and was divided April 1, 1862. The new company became Company D and took the name of the McCullough Rifles.
