Confederate monument at the University of Virginia Confederate Cemetery, Charlottesville Virginia. Photo by K. Lynn Nichols, July 3rd, 2010

The remains of 15 members of the 38th Georgia Regiment repose here, far from their homes in Georgia. None of the 15 graves are individually marked, but the names are listed on a bronze tablet affixed to the Confederate monument, shown above in the photo.

Inscription on monument reads: Fate Denied Them Victory, but Crowned Them with Glorious Immortality."

The University of Virginia medical college was the site of a major Confederate Hospital. Several buildings on the campus and surrounding community were collectively called the Charlottesville General Hospital. Local medical teachers, doctors, students, and citizens helped attend to the sick and wounded. Charlottesville was threatened by Federal raids on several occasions, but remained safe through the end of the war. 1,100 Confederate solders are buried at the University of Virginia Cemetery.

The cemetery is located at the intersections of Alderman & McCormick Streets in Charlottesville, Virginia. If you stop by the University of Virginia Visitors Center, they will provide you with a free map that makes locating the cemetery easy.
