Margaret B. and Eli A. Stewart, of Jefferson County, Georgia, had five sons that served in Company G, of the 38th Georgia Regiment. The Stewart family paid a very heavy price for supporting the Confederacy. Three of the five brothers perished in the war. The two surviving brothers were both wounded and taken prisoner by the Federals.

1. Beverly L. Stewart - Pvt. 10/1/1861. Died at Mount Jackson, Va. December 15, 1862. Born in Ga. about 1836. His occupation listed in the 1860 Census as “wheel wright,” which is a person who builds or repairs wheels.

2. Levin Collins Stewart - Pvt. 3/1/1862. Wounded in 1862.Captured at Wilderness, Va. 5/12/1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Del. February 1865. Received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, Va. for exchange, March 10-12, 1865. Born in 1840 in Jefferson Co. Ga, stated in CSA pension application dated 1904, that he was at Fort Delaware Prison at date of Gen. Lee’s surrender on 4/9/1865. Pvt. J. W. Weeks signed an affidavit supporting his pension claim, saying he saw L. C. Steward taken prisoner at the Wilderness.

3. Robert Stewart - Pvt. 10/1/1861. Killed at 2d Manassas, Va. September 1, 1862. Born in Ga. about 1838.

4. Thomas J. Stewart - Pvt. 10/1/1861. Appointed 3d Sgt. August 9, 1862. Killed at Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/1862. Buried at Mount Jackson Cemetery in Shenandoah County, Va. Born in Ga. about 1842. Born in Ga. about 1843.

5. William Stewart - Pvt. 10/1/1861. Appointed 2d Corp. in 1862. Wounded in 1862. Detailed in hospital on account of disability in 1863. Captured at Harper's Ferry, Va. July 10, 1864. Released at Elmira, N.Y. May 29, 1865. Born in Ga. about 1840.
