Thursday, October 23, 1884 - KILLED: A frightful tragedy occurred in Emanuel County on Friday night, 10th instant. E. Anderson Odom was shot and instantly killed at the house of Chess Flanders by John Cheek. There was a dance at the house, and whisky is said to have been at the bottom of the trouble. The men were boasting of their friendship to each other, when Odom made some remark about the wife of Cheek at which he took offense, and soon leaving the house, was followed by Odom. The report of pistol shots was heard, and Odom fell pierced by two balls, either of which would have proved fatal. The murderer immediately fled and was pursued immediately by a party of armed men, who with others effected his arrest on Wednesday night in a swamp near Blackshear's Mill in Laurens County. He was lodged in Swainsboro jail on Thursday night. Mr. Odom leaves a wife and seven children. Cheek is a man of 45 years of age, and is under bad repute. The verdict of the jury of inquest pronounced the killing murder.
