Mathews, William C. (William Collins Mathews) - Enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. E, 1st Regiment Ga. Inf. (Ramsey's) 8/1/1861. Mustered out at Augusta, Ga. 3/18/1862. Enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. G, 38th Regiment Ga. Inf. 7/1/1862. Appointed Ordnance Sgt. 7/27/1862. Elected 2d Lt. of Co. G, 38th Regiment Ga. Inf. 2/1/1863. Severely wounded at Gettysburg, Pa. 7/ 1st. Captured at Smithburg, Md. 7/4/1863. Elected Capt. 5/12/1864. Paroled at Johnson’s Island, O. and forwarded to Point Lookout, Md. for exchange 3/14/1865.

Buried at Sandersville Old City Cemetery, Washington Co., GA. Tombstone reads CAPT 38 GA CO G, born 7/26/1839 died 9/13/1894, buried in Row 6, Lot 59. Obituary printed in Atlanta Constitution Newspaper 9/23/1894.
