Obituary:
Winston New Era Newspaper, November 18, 1910
Hon. R.H. Gaines Passes Into the Great Beyond. Mr. Reuben H. Gaines, an aged citizen of our community died at the home of Mr. Marion Bailey, Monday night. He got a small cut on his leg above the knee while fixing an axe-handle a few weeks back from which he took blood poison and his whole limb became affected, from the effects of which he died. He was buried with Masonic honors Tuesday. He was at one time Sheriff of this county and always stood high among our people. He was a high-toned gentleman, a clever neighbor, and a Christian. He was about 73 years old, and has left hundreds of friends to mourn with his relatives over his departure from among the walks of men, all of whom find comfort in the assurance and belief that his soul is at rest among the redeemed.
