Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, is a large, sprawling cemetery located at 412 South Cherry Street in Richmond, Virginia. Characterized by rolling hills and winding paths overlooking the James River, it is the resting place of two United States Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler, as well as the only Confederate States President, Jefferson Davis.
It is also the resting place of 25 Confederate generals, more than any other cemetery in the country. Included are George Pickett and J.E.B. Stuart.
Hollywood Cemetery was opened in 1849, constructed on land known as "Harvie's Woods" that was once owned by William Byrd II. It was designed in the rural garden style, with its name, "Hollywood," coming from the holly trees dotting the hills of the property.
In 1869, a 90-foot (27 m) high granite pyramid was built as a memorial to the more than 18,000 enlisted men of the Confederate Army buried in the cemetery. Hollywood Cemetery is one of Richmond's major tourist attractions. There are many local legends surrounding certain tombs and grave sites in the cemetery,
The Hollywood Cemetery Registry of Confederate Dead, printed in 1869, contains about 10,500 names of the 18,000 soldiers that rest here. A large portion of the remaining records were destroyed by fire at the very end of the war, leaving nearly 7,500 soldiers unknown.
Forty-one members of the 38th Georgia Regiment are buried at Hollywood Cemetery, more than any other cemetery. Hollywood Cemetery records also list an additional eight soldiers as belonging to the 38th Georgia Regiment, but no supporting records can be found to corroborate these burial records.
Each name entry contains the basic roster notation found in Henderson's Roster of Georgia Confederate Soldiers. The text in bold has been added by the webmaster through research of C.S.A. service records and other historical sources.
Most of these graves are unmarked, unless otherwise noted by the webmaster. Should you have additional information on any of these soldiers please contact me at dnichols16@cox.net
