Eberhart, Robert Patton - Captain 10/15/1861 . Wounded in right lung at Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/1862 . Resigned February 16, 1864 . (Born in GA, October 13, 1834.) CSA records a letter from surgeon stated he was incapabile of performing duties due to debility and chronic diarrhea, and he requested a leave of absence. Was examined by a surgeon on Jan 15th, 1864 and found unfit for military field duty due to hypertrophy of the heart and tuberculosis of the left lung and recommends his resignation be accepted. Participated in the William Walker expedition to invade Nicaragua in 1856. In his later years, he moved to Atlanta and became a prosperous businessman in the wholesale shoe business. Died Jan 17th, 1907 in Atlanta, identified as a Lt. Col. In his obituary. Capt William C. Mathews recalled, “R. P. Eberhardt of Company H was beloved by his whole command and behind none in bravery and gallantry.”

Hall, James C.- (James Chambers Hall) 2d Lt. 10/15/1861. Elected 1st Lt. June 1, 1862. Died in Warwick House Hospital at Lynchburg, Va. August 16, 1862. "Was packed up and sent to Lexington, Ga. August 16, 1862. His wife, Mary Loftis Hall, traveled from Georgia to the Lynchburg hospital, but she arrived the day after his death. She brought his remains home and buried him in Conwell-Fortson-Hall cemetery near Goss, in Elbert County, GA. . The Elberton Star Newspaper, March 23, 1889; Elberton, GA. Son of John Pryor Hall (1797-1838) and Mariah Louisa Turman (1808-1881). He died of typhoid at Lynchburg, VA on 16-18 Aug 1862 and is buried in the Hall-Conwell-Fortson cemetery at Goss, Elbert Co., which is located in front of the former old Hall homeplace.

Oglesby, John Jr. - 2d Lt. 10/15/1861. Elected 2d Lt. July 22, 1862; 1st Lt. September 22, 1862. Severely wounded Jul 1st at Gettysburg during assault on Barlow’s Knoll, on July 1st, 1863 and died the next day at Gettysburg, Pa. July . (Hudgins),

Deadwyler, Henry Robinson (Henry Robinson Deadwyler Jr.) - 1st Sgt. 10/15/1861. Elected Capt. February 16, 1864. Captured at Battle of Spotsylvania C. H., Va. 5/12/1864. Capt Deadwyler was one of the “Immortal Six Hundred” Confederate officers transferred from Fort Delaware to Morris Island, S.C. in August 1864, to be used as human shields in retaliation for like treatment of Union officers, captured and held under Union fire in the City of Charleston by Confederates. The stalemate ended in Oct 1864 and the prisoners were transferred to Fort Pulaski, GA, then back to Fort Delaware. Released at Fort Delaware, Del. June 16, 1865. He was received at Fort Delaware from Belle Plain May 17, 1864. He was then sent to Charleston, S.C. Aug. 20, 1864 and transferred to Ft. Pulaski, Ga. Oct. 21, 1864. He was on roll at Ft. Pulaski Dec. 26, 1864. He was then sent back to Ft. Delaware March 12,1865. He was released from Ft. Delaware June 16, 1865 Born Nov. 21, 1838 in Georgia, died Apr. 20, 1885. Buried in Deadwyler family cemetery, Elbert County, Ga.

Vassar, John J. (or Vasser) - 2d Sgt. 10/15/1861. Appointed 1st Sgt. July 22, 1862. Elected Jr. 2d Lt. July 18, 1863 ; 1st Lt. December 1863. Painfully wounded through the knee at Staunton, Va. May 9, 1864. Born in Ga. about 1837, mechanic, living with Z. Anderson in the 1860 Elbert Co. Census. He was an orphan, having lost his parents before he enlisted, and had only one brother, Lucius, to mourn his death.

Bowers, John H. - 3d Sgt. 10/15/1861. Wounded at Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/1862. The first wound he received was on charging the enemy's line the 12/13/1862, at Fredricksburg, Va., near Hamilton's Crossing, where he received a very painful wound in the right leg below the knee, fracturing the shin bone. After he was able to come back to the command, he again resumed his duties and until he was again wounded on the 5/6/1864, in the Wilderness fight, with a spent ball on top of his head. In a few days he was again with the command, and was wounded the third time 5/12/1864, in charging the enemy at Horse Shoe Bend, at Spottsylvania C. H., Va. This wound he received in the forehead, the same ball wounding A. Y. Gulley through the neck and passing through F. M. Hendrick's whiskers. In a few weeks he was again with the boys as usual. In the next summer's campaign, while in Maryland, he was wounded the fourth time near the city of Washington 7/91864. After he recovered he again came back to the company and still stuck to the boys. Elected 2d Sgt. December 1863. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va. 4/9/1865.

Oglesby, Abda - 4th Sgt 10/15/1861. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/12/1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Del. and sent to Aiken’s Landing, Va. for exchange 9//18/1864. Received at Varina, Va. 9/22/1864. Admitted to Jackson Hospital at Richmond, Va., with abscess on arm, 9/22/1864, and furloughed for 30 days 9/26/1864. Enlisted as a Pvt. in Co. H, 2d Battn. Ga. Militia Cavalry 10/1/1864. Appointed 1st Lt. and Acting Adj. Surrendered at Macon, Ga. 4/ 22/1865. (Born in Elbert Co., Ga. 6/9/1836, died 2/4/1907, in that county.) Buried at Elmhurst City Cemetery, Elberton, Ga., married Mary L. Eberhardt on 23 Jan, 1858, and was father of 7 children. Widow filed a CSA pension application in August, 1907 in Elbert Co., Ga. She was born in Madison Co. Ga., May 10th, 1843, and died 2/27/1919 at the age of 76.

Saunders, Peter M. (or Sanders) - 1st Corp. 10/15/1861. Died of typhoid fever in General Hospital #3, at Lynchburg, Va. 12/1 or 8/1863. Buried there in Confederate Cemetery. No. 3, 2d Line, Lot 200.

Bond, E. M. (Eppy M. Bond)- 2d Corp. 10/15/1861. Wounded in hand at 2d Manassas, Va. 8/28/1862. Roll for August 31, 1864, shows he "Sent up application to be retired. Approved and returned to applicant." Born 28 Feb 1838, single, mechanic, living with mother Clarricy and seven siblings in 1860 census. Married Ella Thornton 1/7/1864, Ella died 20 Aug 1871, he then married Nancy S. Ridgeway 1/18/1872 in Elbert Co., Ga. Eppy died 2 Oct 1914, Elbert Co., GA and is buried at Stinchcomb United Methodist Church, Elbert County, Ga., marker reads CORP, CO H 38, GA INF CSA. Nancy Bond filed a Ga. CSA pension application in 1919. She was born May 10, 1848, died March 16, 1927. Brother of Nelson C. Bond of Co. H.

Andrews, J. O. - ( John O. Andrews ) 3d Corp. 10/15/1861. Elected Jr. 2d Lt. July 22, 1862; 2d Lt. September 22, 1862; 1st Lt. 7/2/1863. Died at Locust Grove, Va. April 4, 1864.

Bennett, A. H. M.- 4th Corp. 10/15/1861. Appointed 2d Corp. December 1863. Wounded at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/12/1864. Captured and paroled at Greenville, S. C. 5/23/1865.

Adams, Hiram Gaines - Pvt. 10/15/1861. Appointed 2d Corp. October 1862. Captured at Gettysburg, Pa. July 3, 1863. Sent to Fort Delaware, Del. July 7, 1863. Transferred to Point Lookout, Md. and exchanged there February 10, 1865. Received at Cox's Landing, James River, Va. February 21, 1865. Buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, Elbert Co Ga., stone reads b. 10/14/1839, d. 9/4/1910.

Adams, James R.- (James Robert Adams) Pvt. March 1, 1864. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. May 19, 1864. Paroled at Point Lookout, Md. in 1864. Received at Venus Point, Savannah River, Ga. for exchange November 15, 1864. No later record. Buried at Vaughan Family Cemetery, Dewy Rose, Elbert Co. Ga. Tombstone reads: CO H 38 GA INF, CSA, no dates. Pvt Jacob Vaughan, also of Co. H, is also buried in this cemetery, the family connection is unknown. James was born in 1836 in Elbert Co. Ga., married Sarah, maiden name unknown, in 1856, died in 1886 in Elbert Co. Widow filed a CSA pension application in 1901 in Elbert Co. Ga. CSA pension application states he was a prisoner of war at the time of surrender 4/9/1865.

Anderson, J. M.- ( James M. V. Andeson ) Pvt. February 9, 1862. Killed at Gaines Mill, Va. 6/27/1862. His father, James E. Anderson filed a claim for unpaid monies due his son on Sept 3rd, 1863 in CSA service records. Record states he died on June 30th, 1862 and left no wife or children.

Received at Boulware R Cox's Wharves, James River, Va., March 10-12, 1865. Married Permelia A. Oglesby 12/15/1857, in Elbert Co. Widow filed a CSA pension application in 1901 in Elbert Co. He died in Elbert Co. in 1883. J. C. Campbell signed an affidavit in pension records attesting to his service.

Stated he was born in Ga. about 1831, occupation listed as farmer. Stated in application that he surrendered at Appomattox C. H. Private J. E. Campbell signed an affidavit in application attesting to his service and surrender. Buried at Stinchcomb United Methodist Church, Elbert County, Ga., tombstone reads: CO H 38, GA INF CSA, no dates.

Booth, Absalom - Pvt. 10/15/1861. Wounded at Gaines Mill, Va. 6/27/1862. Roll dated November 6, 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent with leave since August 26, 1864."Captured and paroled at Andersonville, S. C. May 23, 1865. Filed a Ga. CSA pension application in 1889. Stated he was shot three times in the battle of Gaines Mill, once in the shoulder, where the ball remained as of 1889, in the left hip, and in the right arm. Born in Ga. 10/4/1817, farmer, married, six children, real estate valued at $500 and personal property at $400. 1860 US Census for Elbert Co. Ga. Son of Gabriel Booth and Elizabeth "Betsy" Stinchcomb, brother of John C. Booth of Co. H.

Roll dated November 6, 1864, last on file, shows him "Absent, wounded, since September 25, 1864." CSA pension record states he was wounded 24 Sept 1864 and leg amputated the next day, 25 Sept. Widow Eliza Parham Booth, married 12/23/1866, filed a CSA pension application in 1916. John was born in 1837 and died 5/29/1916, buried at Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Elbert Co. Ga. Pvt. J. G. Seymour signed an affidavit attesting to his service and wounds in pension record.

Carruth, F. A.- (Francis Asbury Carrouth) Pvt. September 10, 1862. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/12/1864. Paroled at Elmira, N. Y. and sent to James River, Va. for exchange March 10, 1865. (Born in Franklin County, Ga. in 1839. Died in Madison County, Ga. in 1904.) Filed a Ga. CSA pension application in Madison Co., Ga. in 1901. Stated he was at home on parole during the surrendered at Appomattox, Va. 4/9/1865, listed occupation after war as farmer. Pvt. Jeptha I. Parham signed an affidavit attesting to his service and capture, and said he was captured with him and both carried to Fort Delware and then Elmira, NY prison. Married Eliza Bond Andrews 10/17/1867 in Elbert Co., Ga. All six Carruth’s in Co H were brothers.

Carruth, G. A.- (Gideon Asbury Carrouth) Pvt. 10/15/1861. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va. 4/9/1865. Filed CSA pension application in Cherokee Co., Ga., in 1902. Born 7/4/1838 in Madison Co., Ga., listed occupation in 1865 as shoe maker and later occupation as a farmer. Pvt. J. E. Campbell signed an application supporting his pension as a witness to his service and surrender at Appomattox. Married Sarah E. Booth in Elbert Co., Ga, 3/10/1868. All six Carruth’s in Co H were the sons of Harriet and James Elbert Carruth and were brothers.

Cash, S. J.- (Seaborn J. Cash) Pvt. 10/15/1861. Died at Savannah, Ga. November 19, 1861. Born about 1838. Died at Camp Bartow, Savannah, Ga., at 7 O’Clock in the morning on Friday, Nov 29th, 1861, of typhoid fever after an illness of one week. His body was placed and coffin and given a military salute of three volleys fired over it by members of Company H. His coffin was placed in a wagon and transported back to Elbert Co. for burial. In the 1860 US Federal Census, Seaborn J. Cash was 22 years old, living on the farm of his sister, Permelia Cash Craft, in Elbert Co., his occupation was listed as carpenter and he owned $1,400 in personal property.

Mathews recalled, “The two Harbin boys of Company H., Jasper and Marion, were noted as any of the regiment for dash and bravery. The later (Marion) was the youngest and smallest soldier in the regiment, enlisting when he was thirteen years old.

King, stated he was guarding a wagon train when the confederate army left Petersburg on the march to Appomattox in April 1865. Stated his command was scattered and they never reached their command and the wagon train was captured.

Source: 1860; US, Elbert Co., Georgia; Roll: M653_120; Page: 820; Family # 529. Widow, Nancy Pearson, filed a CSA pension claim in 1891, in Elbert Co. She states they were married in 1860 and she had been a resident of Ga. since 2/2/1837. Also stated in the application that he never returned home from the war. Abda Oglesby, James C. Thornton, and Almond Butler signed an affidavit stating he never returned home from the war and they were satisfied he died after being exchanged. Application later stated he took quite sick around the time of the surrender or soon after and started home, but died on the way home. Buried at Loudon Park National Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.

Peyton, John G. Pvt. (or Payton) – Aug/1862. Not listed in Henderson’s Roster of Ga. Confederate Soldiers for this unit. Widow, Elizabeth A. Peyton filed a pension application in 1891. Application states he contacted measles and died at Staunton, Va. in the fall of 1862. She stated they were married 1/24/1858 and she had been a resident of Ga. since 2/22/1836. Affidavit signed by A. W. Vaughn attesting to his service and death.

Power, J. M.- (John Makin Power) Pvt. 10/15/1861. Captured and paroled at Hartwell, Ga. May 18, 1865. Born in Madison Co., Ga., 12/6/1833. Widow, Amanda Power, of White Co., Ga., filed a CSA pension application in 1901. Amanda was born in Elbert Co. Ga., 10/14/1828, married 11/23/1853. States in application he was home when Gen. Lee surrendered, due to pneumonia, fever, and lung trouble, while at Black Ankle, Va., was granted a furlough Mar/1865 by regimental Surgeon Arrington. John Power died at home in Habersham Co., Ga., 6/11/1888. Affidavit signed by J. C. Booth attesting to the facts of his service and furlough. John Mankin Power died in 1888 at age 55 in Habersham County and Amanda died in 1907 at age 70. She is buried in Mountain Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Walton County, Georgia.

Pulliam, James P.- Pvt. 3/1/1862. Died of typhoid pneumonia in C. S. A. General Hospital at Charlottesville, Va. June 30 or July 1, 1862. Buried there in Confederate Cemetery. Buried at University of Virginia Confederate Cemetery, Charlottesville, Albemarle Co., Va. Soldier's names are listed on four bronze plaques on statue, most of soldiers have no stone. Marker lists name as J. Pulline.

Discharged, furnished Elijah B. Norman as substitute, August 24, 1863. Widow, Dallas A. Pulliam field pension application in 1891. Married 12/6/1857 and she resided in Ga. since 7/5/1837. States he contacted dropsy from exposure of camp life and was discharged Dec/1864. He returned home and took immediately to bed and died on 6/15/1865. Affidavit signed by J. M. Seymour and J. W. Booth attesting to these facts and service.

Pulliam, William - (William Thomas “Honey” Pulliam) Pvt. 10/15/1861. Wounded at 2d Manassas, Va. 8/28/1862. Captured and paroled at Hartwell, Ga. May 19, 1865. Filed for a Ga. CSA pension in Elbert Co. in 1889; occupation was farmer. Stated he was wounded in the battle of 2nd Manassas by a ball entering below the articulation joint of the right shoulder, coming out at the connecting point of the right arm rendering right arm useless. Son of Joseph Pulliam and Elizabeth "Betsy" Bond. Stated he had been resident of Ga. since 7/18/1831. Married Adeline Eliza LeSueur in Madison County, GA on 10/26/1854. Eliza was born in 1836 amd filed for a CSA widow’s pension in 1905. He is buried at Stinchcomb United Methodist Church, Elbert County, Ga., tombstone reads: CO H 38, GA INF CSA, died 6/14/1905.

Roberts, O. M.- (Olive M. Roberts) Pvt. June 20, 1862. Discharged on account of deafness July 27, 1862. Filed for a CSA pension in Elbert Co., Ga. in 1888. Stated that a cannon shell exploded near him in during a skirmish in the battle of Gaines Mill, June 27th, 1862 and since that time he had been deaf and was granted a honorable discharge. Resident of Ga. since 11/19/1814.

Rousey, Mitchell G. (Mitchell Gaines Rousey) - Pvt. 9/10/1862. Wounded at Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/1862. Died of typhoid fever in General Hospital #3, at Lynchburg, Va. 10/23/1863. "Was sent to Lexington, Ga." Was born about 1828 in Elbert County, GA to Foster Rousey and Sarah "Sally" Dennard. He married Malinda Emily Bond on 4 December 1854 in Madison County, GA and they had two known children, Melvin and Henry Crawford Rousey. His body was sent to Lexington, GA by rail, and was picked up by his widow Emily in a wagon that she herself drove from the Stinchcomb community in Elbert County. She brought him home and he was buried in the Stinchcomb Methodist Church Cemetery. Buried at Stinchcomb United Methodist Church, Elbert County, Ga., tombstone reads: born 1828, died 10/23/63, CO H 38, GA INF CSA.

Rousey, Woodson - Not listed in Henderson’s roster. Pvt. Admitted to Jackson Hosptial, Richmond, Va. March 22nd, 1865. Captured in a hospital at Richmond, Va., on April 3rd, 1865. Admitted to prison hospital at Newport News, Va., on May 28th, died June 17th of chronic diarrhea. Listed as a prisoner of war, 38th Ga. Regt., Company H, who died at Newport News Prison Camp, Virginia, June 17th, 1865. Listed in CSA service records by error in the 38th N.C.; later correct to read “38th Ga.” Buried on P. West’s farm in Newport News. Born in Ga. about 1844, farmer, living with mother, Martha Burden Rousey, and three siblings. 1860 US Census for Elbert Co. Brother of James and Archibald Rousey also of Co. H. His father, William Archibald Rousey died in 1850. Born in GA. About 1844, farmer, single, living with mother, four siblings, and Pvt L. D. Sanders, Charles H.- Pvt. 10/15/1861. Wounded in leg, necessitating amputation below knee, and captured at Gettysburg, Pa. 7/1/1863. Paroled September 27, 1863. At home, wounded, close of war. Filed claim for artifical leg with state of Ga. in 1879, affidavit signed attesting to his loss by William Willis, Andrew J. Bond, and Obda Oglesby. Resident of Ga. since 1840. States in application he was shot through the left leg on 7/2/1863 and the leg was amputated the next day. Buried at Stinchcomb United Methodist Church, Elbert County, Ga., tombstone reads: CO H 38, GA INF CSA, no dates.

Sanders, Jacob E.- Pvt. 10/15/1861. Severely wounded in abdomen at Gettysburg, Pa. 7/1/1863 , and died there from wounds July 6, 1863. His widow, Mary A. Sanders filed a pension application in 1891 in Elbert Co., Ga. She stated she was a resident of Ga. since 1/13/1841 and married Jacob in 1860. Affidavit signed by William Pulliman, James W Bass Sr., and A. J. Webb, attesting to his service and death. Mary died in Apr/1924.

His death was reported to me by James Booth of his company.” An affidavit was signed by Capt. R. P. Patton and William Oglesby attesting to the facts of his service and death. H, is also buried in same cemetery, their relationship is unknown. Jacob was born in Ga. about 1823, farmer, married, 3 small boys, real estate valued at $800, and personal property at $443. 1860 US Census, Elbert Co., Georgia; Roll: M653_120; Page: 795. Brother of Alexander and John Henry Vaughn of Co. H., Uncle of William M. and Thomas A. Moore of Co. H. Martha J. Hewell Vaughan filed a CSA widow’s pension application in 1891. Application states he was taken a congestive chill and died a few days later at Savannah, Ga. Widow states they were married 12/16/1847 and she was a resident of Ga. since 7/10/1828.

White, Garnett - Pvt. 3/1/1862. Captured in Loudon County, Va. July 16, 1864. Died in U. S. General Hospital at Elmira, N. Y. July 27, 1865. Grave #2859, Woodlawn National Cemetery.

White, Robert - Pvt. 10/15/1861. Captured at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/12/1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Del. February 1865. Exchanged March 7, 1865. Received at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, Va., March 10, 1865. Born in 1844, died 1888, married Pvt. John U. Colvard’s sister in 1868.
