Filed a pension CSA pension application in 1905 in Dawson Co., Ga. Occupation stated since 1865 farmer. He stated, “I was captured 4th of July 1863, (retreat from Gettysburg) I was barefoot and marching in rear of the army by order of commanding officer.” States he was captured at a platoon bridge at Falling Waters along with his brother Benji Payne. Record states he was exchanged and returned home on furlough and then returned to Augusta, Ga. Witnesses stated he had no family to help support him in application. Died May 16, 1917, buried at Juno Baptist Church Cemetery, Dawson Co., Ga.
