Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery

The Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery is the final resting place of over 600 Confederate soldiers who died in areas of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania. Many were killed in battle, others died of wounds or disease in their camps.

Seven members of the 38th Georgia Regiment are at Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery, which is located just a short distance from the town of Spotsylvania Court House. Many members of Georgia Brigade are buried in this cemetery and I have photos of all the grave stones I found for members of the Brigade. The cemetery is organized by state, with all the soldiers from Georgia being buried in the Georgia Square section of the cemetery.

1. Joshua P. Arrington - Company G, Jefferson County. Pvt. 10/1/1861. Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/10/1864. Buried there in Confederate Cemetery. Buried at Confederate Cemetery, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. Tombstone reads: CO. G, 38 GA INF, CSA, no dates. Many members of the Georgia Brigade buried here. Born in Jefferson Co., Ga. about 1844, single, living with mother Jane B. Arrington, and three siblings.

2. Farmer, Jesse T. - (Jesse Theoderick Farmer) Company E, Oglethorpe County. Pvt. 3/10/1862. Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/12/1864. Buried there in Confederate Cemetery. Other records show: Mortally wounded in the battle of the Wilderness, May 6th, 1864.

3. Sidney T. Farmer - Company G, Jefferson County. Pvt. 3/1/1862. Appointed 2d Sgt. 7/1/1862. Pvt. Nov/1862. Appointed Quartermaster Sgt. 12/1/1862. Elected Jr. 2d Lt. 1/2/1863. Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/10/1864. Buried at Confederate Cemetery, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. Tombstone reads: CO. G, 38 GA INF, CSA, no dates. Born about 1841, Brother of Lt. William J. and James J. Farmer of Co. G.


4. Lindsey E. Hall (or Lindsay) - Company H, Elbert County. Pvt. September 10, 1862. Died at Fredericksburg, Va. April 15, 1863. Buried in Confederate Cemetery at Spotsylvania, Va, tombstone reads, CO H, 38 GA INF, CSA. Born in Elbert Co., GA in 1832. Brother of Francis M. and Simeon Hall of Co. H. Enrolled as a conscript. Died in camp.


5. Elisha Meeks - Company C, Bulloch & Emanuel Counties. Pvt.10/1/1861. Killed at Spotsylvania, Va. 5/10/1864. Detailed as nurse at smallpox hospital at Richmond during June 1863. Buried at Confederate Cemetery, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. Tombstone reads: CO. C, 38 GA INF, CSA, no dates. Born in Ga. about 1843. Brother of John Meeks of same company. Son of Allen and Mary Meeks of Johnson County, Ga., which is adjacent to Emanuel Co.


6. Thomas J. Woodliff - ( Thomas Jefferson “Jeff” Woodliff ) Company B, Milton County. Pvt. May 17, 1862. Killed at Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/1862. Buried at Confederate Cemetery, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia. Tombstone reads: CO.B, 38 GA INF, CSA, no dates.


7. Wilson, W. A.- ( William Alexander Wilson ) Company A, DeKalb County. Pvt. 5/15/1862. Died of pneumonia at Hamilton's Crossing, Va. 4/5/1863. Buried in Spotsylvania Confederate Cemetery. Tombstone reads: CO. A, 38 GA INF,CSA, no dates. Brother of Thomas M. Wilson of same company. Born 21 August 1844, son of Sarah Chesnut and Robert M. Wilson.
