Elberton Star Newspaper
Friday April 14, 1916

Mr Stephen H. Fortson peacefully passed away at his home near Indian Hill, in this county, Wednesday night. He had been sick for a long time and confined to his bed for the past several months and with steady nerve consciously and patiently waited for the relief from suffering which death would bring. He was about 80 years old and is survived by his wife and three children - Mrs. Harry Eberhardt of Carlton, Miss May Fortson of this county and Mrs. Sidney A Hunt Jr. of LaFayette, Ga. Mr Forton was one of the largest and most successful planters and businessmen of Elbert. He fought for four years through the war between the states and his comrades say a braver and better soldier never shouldered a musket in defense of the South. The interment was at Falling Creek Church cemetery this morning. The funeral services were conducted by his lifelong friend and kinsman, Rev James N Wall.
