Coleman, Mathew - Mathew M. Coleman - Pvt. 10/1/1861. Appointed 1st Corp. in 1862. Killed at Antietam, Md. 9/17/1862.

Buried at Washington Confederate Cemetery, which is located inside Hagerstown's Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, Maryland. Graves are not individually marked, but cemetery records show Coleman, Mathew M., 1st Corp., Co. C, 38th Regt. Vol. Infantry.

Pvt. Coleman has the unique distinction of being the only known, identified member of the 38th Ga., killed at Antietam and buried in a known grave. His father, Elisha Coleman, filed a claim for any unpaid money due his son, May 24th, 1864, in Emanuel Co.

The vast majority of the Antietam CSA dead were re-interred in this cemetery after the war. About 50 members, according to some accounts, of the regiment were killed at Antietam. It is highly likely that most of 38th Ga. soldiers killed in the battle of Antietam are buried at this cemetery in mass graves. Of the 2,468 CSA buried there, only 346 are known.
