Private Mathew M. Coleman enlisted on October 1st, 1861. He was appointed 1st Corporal during 1862. He was killed at the battle of Sharpsburg, also known as Antietam, on September 17th, 1862. This was the single most bloody day of the entire war.
Private Coleman has a unique distinction in the 38th Georgia Regiment, he is the only known unit member that died at Antietam and is buried in a marked grave. He is buried at Washington Confederate Cemetery, which is located inside Hagerstown's Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, Maryland. The soldier's graves are not individually marked, but cemetery records show Coleman, Mathew M., 1st Corp., Co. C, 38th Regt. Vol. Infantry. The vast majority of the Confederate dead from Antietam are unknown and were re-interred in this cemetery during the 1870's. Of the 2,468 Confederate soldiers buried in this cemetery, only 346 are known.
It is highly likely that most, if not all, of 38th Ga. soldiers killed during the battle of Antietam are buried there in unmarked graves.
